United States, South Carolina, Spartanburg – 08-08-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — In August 2011, seven year-old second grader Adom Appiah enrolled in a writing program at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). By 3rd grade, he started competing in his school spelling bees. In 7th grade, he finally made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC. To qualify for DC, Adom had to win his school and South Carolina regional bees. As he was preparing for the qualifying rounds of the bee, he embarked on a class project to support his community. With the help of his mentor, teachers, advisors, community foundation and family, the class project became a full fledged nonprofit called Ball4Good. The nonprofit, run by Adom and his peers, supports communities through sports.

After a successful sold out project launch and a great run at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Adom decided to share his strategy with other children. Lessons learned from four summers of writing with the Johns Hopkins CTY writing program helped Adom capture his experience in building a nonprofit and competing in academic competitions in his first book, Kids Can Change the World. The book was a 2017 Amazon bestseller.

As a result of the popularity of the book and the success of Ball4Good, Adom became a motivational speaker – sharing his journey with teachers, civic groups, nonprofit leaders and fellow students. In the Spring of 2019, Adom was named the South Carolina High School State Honoree for the prestigious Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The awards ceremony was held in DC in May 2019, with Academy, Emmy and Tony Award winner Viola Davis as the keynote speaker.

As part of the Spirit of Community Awards celebrations, Adom visited Washington, DC elementary schools with 101 student State Honorees from across the United States. During the school visits, Adom was given the opportunity to read his book – Kids Can Change the World to first graders. The questions posed by these younger readers during the DC and prior school visits motivated Adom to write a simpler version of the book for children from Pre-K through second grade.

Adom’s third book, Kids Can Change the World – Young Readers’ Edition, was released on August 5, 2019. A fifteen-year old student athlete, Adom is now an author of three books. His second book, titled Bouncing Back from Failure, offers an uplifting perspective for kids facing disappointment. All three books are available in select bookstores and online.
