New York City – 12-24-2020 ( — Premier Senior Living, LLC, (PSL) has recently announced new on-site rehabilitation services at its senior care facilities. New in-house rehab services offered seven days a week include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

According to PSL Marketing Director Sheri Steele, new in-house therapy services are currently being offered at communities in Michigan and New York and are expected to expand to Ohio and North Carolina in 2021.

PSL currently operates senior care facilities in Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Steele said in-house treatments are aimed at maximizing strength, independence and quality of life for patients. New therapy gyms have been installed at most PSL communities to provide on-site, in-house therapy for its patients.

Previously, PSL relied on home health physical therapy services or outpatient locations. The new on-site services put everything under one roof and opens the door for greater accessibility.

What Makes In-House Therapy Better?

The main benefit of in-house therapy at a PSL community is two-fold, according to Steele. First, patients can receive professional therapy services under one roof without having to visit multiple locations or spend a lot of time in the car or utilizing public transportation. With in-house services, you’ll visit the same location each time and always see a smiling, friendly face ready to assist you.

Another wonderful benefit of in-house therapy is you’ll get access to all of the impressive amenities that a PSL community has to offer. From state of the art equipment and services to relaxing amenities and a friendly staff, you’ll feel right at home on your road to recovery.

Benefits of Physical Therapy

Physical therapy – often shortened to “PT” – is care aimed at relieving pain while improving function and mobility through exercises and workouts that help restore and prevent further injury. PT can help individuals of all ages with a range of conditions. At PSL, many patients are recovering from a light procedure or surgery and are looking to get back on their feet and return to “normal.”

“Our goal is to get our patients as strong and independent as possible, maintaining their dignity and quality of life,” Steele said.

Physical therapy at PSL treats a wide array of medical conditions, including cardiopulmonary conditions like COPD, along with musculoskeletal dysfunction including post hip and knee surgery or injuries, back pain, shoulder (rotator cuff) injuries and joint disorders such as TMJ. PT can also ease the effects of a stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and traumatic brain injuries. It can also address hand issues like carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger.

Patients who utilize PT have seen pain management with a reduced need for opioids and other painkillers, as well as avoiding additional surgeries, Steele said.

Steele said PSL recommends each patient receive a PT evaluation upon admission to assess their current physical condition.

Advantages of Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy, or OT, gives patients the confidence and tools to live a healthy, productive and independent life. Occupational therapists work to improve the day-to-day life of their patients, teaching them the skills necessary to make it through the day. This can include things like getting dressed by yourself, brushing your teeth or hair, preparing a basic meal and performing necessary chores around the house, and preparing for bed.

From time to time, patients can have certain motor skills or abilities deteriorate or completely go away following a surgery or other medical procedure. This is when an OT steps in. Following doctor’s orders, the OT will work with the patients to relearn vital daily skills. Through coaching, repetition and complete support, occupational therapists often see great success getting patients back on track in a short period of time.

“All of this leads to an improved quality of life for our wonderful seniors we serve,” Steele said.

Speech Therapy Benefits

Speech therapy is the treatment of communication and speech disorders that develop in childhood or are caused by an injury or illness, like a brain injury or stroke. Professionals who work in speech therapy are known as speech-language pathologists, or SLPs.

There are several communication and speech disorders that can be treated by an SLP. At PSL, pathologists work with patients suffering from cognitive-communication disorders, aphasia and dysarthria.

  • Cognitive-communication disorders are typically due to an injury to the part of the brain that controls your ability to think, resulting in memory issues, difficulty speaking or listening, and hindering problem-solving ability.
  • Aphasia is an acquired disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak and understand others that usually occurs following a stroke or other brain condition.
  • Dysarthria is slowed or slurred speech, commonly due to a weakness or inability to control the muscles used to talk. It is usually caused by a nervous system disorder and issues that cause facial paralysis or throat weakness like multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and stroke.

Medical Coverage for Services

According to Steele, therapy participation requires a physician prescription. Services are typically covered under private insurance, Medicare Part B or HMO B benefits. Services are provided in partnership with HealthPRO® Heritage, one the nation’s most innovative therapy and consulting management firms.

“We have worked with the HealthPRO® Heritage successfully in the past and have a long-term respect for their services and outcomes,” Steele said.

Tackling COVID-19 Concerns

According to Steele, PSL has re-evaluated all cleaning regiments, protocols and procedures in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s crucial that senior living providers take accountability and action to protect its residents,” she said. “Our communities are one of the safest places for seniors right now.”

Steele said PSL has been following guidelines set forth by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Department of Health. Measures taken at PSL facilities include limiting visitors, social distancing, improved move-in procedures for new guests and mandatory COVID testing throughout the day for staff.

PSL communities are now using hospital-grade antiviral disinfectant that is registered by the EPA for use in clinics, dentist offices, hospitals and other medical facilities. It commonly targets microorganisms found in healthcare. Strict cleaning schedules are maintained at all communities on hourly, shift and daily cleaning regiments, Steele said.

Communities have access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like face coverings, gloves, hand sanitizer and toilet paper – even if supplies run short at the local grocery store. In addition to emergency PPE kits, facilities are fully stocked with necessities like medical gowns and thermometers, Steele said.
